FIRE DOUSES RAVENS TO ADVANCE TO WESTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP

COLUMBUS, OHIO, September 19, 2011 - The Columbus Fire football team beat the Detroit Ravens 29-27 this past Saturday, September 17, in the second round of the Elite MCFL playoffs. The Fire scored on its first offensive play of the game when quarterback Antwaun Gibbs connected with wide receiver Mike Tatum for a 65-yard touchdown pass. After a failed extra point attempt, the Ravens came back and scored a touchdown to take a 7-6 lead at end of the first quarter.

Over the next two and a half quarters, running back Maurice Douse led the offense both on the ground and catching passes from Gibbs. Douse scored three touchdowns and the Fire had a 29-13 lead going in to the final five minutes of the game. The Ravens made a late charge, scoring two quick touchdowns to cut the lead to 29-27, yet the Fire was able to  hold the ball at the end of the game highlighted by a 25-yard pass from Gibbs to Tatum that sealed the victory.

The Fire will travel to Detroit this Saturday, September 24, to take on the Michigan Gators in the Elite MCFL Western Conference Championship. The Gators beat the Racine Raiders this past Saturday, 35-16, to advance. Michigan earned the number one seed after finishing the season 8-2 and won a tie-breaker with Columbus after beating the Fire 26-20, in Columbus, during the regular season. The winner of this Saturday's game will host the Eastern Conference champion for the Elite MCFL Championship.
